For prospective students

Thanks for your interest in joining our group. Our group accept only a few graduate students and interns every year. Below are general information that you should understand before sending me an email.

Graduate school admission

In Japan, a graduate program typically consists of two-year Master's + three-year PhD. Tohoku University, among other graduate schools in Japan, requires an on-site entrance examination for admission into the graduate school. Also, it is common in Japan that PhD students have to find a scholarship to support himself/herself during the graduate study.

See the following links for general admission info at GSIS.

We consider various aspects in accepting a student, apart from admission exam. For example, you might be able to impress me, if you have previously published a research paper in a prestigious AI-related conference or famous vision conference, or you have worked with a computer vision professor in the other institution or research lab. Of course, we consider applicants even if you do not have any research paper before. You can increase the chance of acceptance by showing great coding skills on Github, excellent GPA in the school, or any other unique experience relevant to AI research.

Internship / Research student

We accept a few graduate-level interns (e.g., PhD students enrolled in the other institution) given that we have an open position in the lab. We do NOT accept international undergraduates, unless the student applies through some form of a special exchange program by the school.

Our lab

We are located at Mechanical Engineering Bldg 2 (A-03), in the beautiful Aobayama campus of Tohoku University. The lab has CPU/GPU servers for heavy-duty computing as well as a personal workstation for every graduate student. The preferred communication language for research is English, though occasionally Japanese communication might be necessary for school matters or daily life in town. Feel free to contact our students regarding any concern about living in Japan.
